Emilio Vavarella

Emilio Vavarella  (Monfalcone, 1989) is an artist and researcher at Harvard University, where he is completing a PhD in Film, Visual Studies e Critical Media Practice. Vavarella studied at the University of Bologna, the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, the Bilgi University in Istanbul and the Iuav in Venice. His work combines interdisciplinary research and media experimentation and examines the relationship between subjectivity, non-human creativity and technology power. Vavarella has won several prizes and awards including: Exibart Prize (2020); Italian Council (2019); SIAE Nuove Opere (2019); Premio Fattori Contemporaneo (2019); NYSCA Electronic Media and Film Finishing Funds (2016); Primo Premio Francesco Fabbri per l’Arte Contemporanea (2015) Movin’Up Grant (2015); and Premio Lapsus per la fotografia – Celeste Prize (2013). Among his most important recent exhibitions in Italy: Low Form al MAXXI – Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo, curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi; That’s It! al MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna curated by Lorenzo Balbi; RE-CAPTURE: Room(s) for Imperfection curated by Federica Patti at GALLLERIAPIÚ; La meglio gioventù, curated by Andrea Bruciati at Villa Manin. Among the most significant recent exhibitions in Italy: ISEA, iMAL, Media Art Biennale, New York Electronic Arts Festival, EMAF, JMAF, and at prestigious locations such as KANAL – Centre Pompidou; The Photographers’ Gallery in London; the Museo Nacional Bellas Artes in Santiago; the National Art Center di Tokyo; l’Eyebeam Art and Technology Center di New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art Vojvodina, the Harvard Art Museum, Fondazione Studio Marangoni and Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa. His work is regularly published in newspapers, trade magazines and scientific publications.
