rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The O ther Shapes of Me): Sourcecode marks the conclusive act in a trilogy of exhibitions based on the project rs548049170_1_698 69_TT (The Other Shapes of Me). Conceived by artist Emilio V avarella\, winner of the 6th edition of the Italian Council grant (2019)\, this project is the result of an interdisciplinary resea rch into the origin and current applications of binary technology: from we aving to programming\, algorithms\, software\, and automation processes\, up to the complete computerization of the human being.
\nThe exhibit
ion “Sourcecode” will open in Bologna at GALLLERIAPIÙ\, following the prev
ious exhibitions “Ideas\, Hypotheses\, Assumptions and Objects
” (July-September 2020\, Gagliano del Capo)\, and
Whereas the previous two exhib itions in this series were focused respectively on Vavarella’s research pr ocess and on his work methodology\, the current show will unveil Vavarella ’s new project in its entirety. The fulcrum of the show is the installatio n rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The Other Shapes of Me). The title refers to the first line of text resulting from the genotypin g of Vavarella’s DNA. This piece is based on the translation of his geneti c code into a large fabric\, through the labour of his mother\, using one of the first modern computational machines from the late nineteenth centur y: the Jacquard loom. The result is a monumental work composed of a graysc ale fabric\, a loom\, and a video. The use of the nineteenth-century loom led to the production of a grayscale textile sixty centimeters wide and ei ghty-two meters long\, thus pushing the technical possibilities of this ea rly computational machine to their furthest limits. This work\, currently on loan\, has become part of the permanent collection of MAMbo – Museo d’A rte Moderna di Bologna.
\nThe show also includes a new series of wor ks entitled Sections (The Other Shapes of Me): m edium- and large-scale tapestries\, eight of which are on view\, that expl ore the weaving possibilities of contemporary digital looms. Every single piece corresponds to a section of Vavarella’s DNA. Pushing the technical possibilities of these more modern machines\, Vavarella has produced polyc hrome tapestries whose vertical dimension corresponds to his own height. p>\n
The exhibition is closed by the series Samples (The Oth er Shapes of Me): nine small- and medium-sized tapestries\, never exhibited in Italy. Each tapestry corresponds to a DNA sample of the artist\, woven through heterogeneous digital processes.
\nThe show is accompanied by the artist book rs548049170_1_69869_TT publishe d by MOUSSE and edited by Emilio Vavarella\, Claudio Zecchi\, and Paolo Me le. This publication highlights and extends the aim of Vavarella’s project through the contributions of fifteen thinkers and practitioners from the fields of art\, philosophy\, bioengineering\, media theory\, and the histo ry of science and technology.

The concept of the show revolves around the idea of a visual dialogue between contemporary artists \, represented by Gluklya\, and the heritage of historica l surrealism through Kati Horna’s photog raphy\, “Garden of Trust: visual correspondence between Gluklya and Kati H orna” is subdivided in acts\, like a play\, that narrates the story underl ying in the exhibition. On display the imaginary and imagined\, dialogue\, between the two artists. The visitor is welcomed by the photographic seri es by Kati Horna Oda a la Necrofilia (1962)\, an emblematic work of the artist who ate that point had lived in Mexico for several years. Oda a la necrophilia\, where a female figure (play ed by Leonora Carrington)\, hovers around a mask lying on a bed. There is an immediate element of mystery as a somber drama unfolds in the first ima ges. A shrouded figure moves from one side of the bed to the other and the n prostrates itself sadly\, before the mask’s empty\, petrified face. The images exude pain but also an immediate eroticism: the lonely eroticism of a woman who worships the emptiness of the figure\, who keeps vigil over i t in a kind of ritual. Alongside the black and white photographs\, Gulkly a’s watercolors and installations from the Corona Drawings series\, created during the pandemic\, recall that sense of dar k mystery and imminent drama. If Horna responds to sadness with eroticism\ , Gluklya does so with an inexplicable sense of excitement.
